Step 1

Eat less meat

Eating less meat is a fast, no cost way to reduce your carbon footprint.  In fact it is not “no cost” as it makes the environment a better place and lowers your cost of living.

Consider the following facts:

Private householders are being asked to conserve water, but 70% of all water goes to producing food, compared to 20% by industries and 10% by households. Now consider it takes 193 litres of water to produce a kg of lettuce; 210 litres of water to produce a kg of wheat; 412 litres to produce a kg of apples; 684 litres to produce a kg of chicken; 13,692 litres to produce a kg of pork; and 43,800 litres of water to produce just one kg of beef.  Scientists have calculated that we would save more water by not eating one kg of beef or 8 hamburgers, than by not showering for at least 12 months!  And if you grow grain and feed it to animals and then eat the animals, you lose 90% of the energy.  It also requires a lot more fossil fuel energy to make that happen. To produce one kg of beef, it takes the energy equivalent of 7.5 litres of petrol.

This approach is also great for South Africa as more people will be fed at a lower cost and the environment will be saved as well.

Statistics above from Lohas (lifestyle) Organic Vegan Eco-dimensions website at Supreme Master TV's Videos on Climate Change Protect Our Home with Love conference.  Note that I'm not suggesting you become a vegan. We aren't, but we have cut our meat consumption dramatically and it is helping to save the planet, save ourselves (it is more healthy) and save our pocket.
