The fastest way to reducing one's energy consumption is to start with the things that have a big return on investment or don't require a big outlay. For example, an electricity meter that shows what's being used at any time, thereby helping to change one's behaviour. Behaviour change is the most critical thing required for any change to happen.

Having hourly, daily, weekly and monthly graphs also helps.

Being able to see one's consumption at a glance is the best of all. One can switch things on and off and see how much electricity one is using. And if one thinks everything is off and there is still consumption, one can find out what it is. Perhaps a phantom load? A 20 Watt phantom load might cost R226 per annum. 20 Watts * 24 Hours per day * 365 Days / 1000 (to kwh) * R1.29 cents per kwh.
